Rain and Mushrooms

I got an interesting e-mail from John III about the walk last week at Mingo Creek.

There were mushrooms everywhere in the spot we were at. We filled up 3 picnic tables. There must have been a dozen different types of amanitas a number of which I have never seen before. Lots of cool stuff. Mushrooms are really starting to come up with all the rain.

That's really good news. I've been looking for horse mushrooms and have not found any yet. Big John always says that you need two inches of rain for black trumpets to show. Anyone finding any of those?

Have you voted for a hat? Turnout at the poles has been light but two of the hats have emerged as favorites.

The rain is doing the garden a lot of good. The weeds are thriving. I was fortunate in getting the mulch down before the heavy rains came. That should keep the weeds down in the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.

In the "Why do they do that category?" My golden retriever got onto the road after the manure wagon passed and had the best of times rolling in some really fresh manure.

Long Days and Lightening Bugs

Yesterday's evening sky was clear and at 9:30 there was still enough "twilight" to do the last bit of puttering before calling it a day. Can a summer's day ever be too long? Maybe. At the more northern latitudes the days are really long. I have a friend in Krakow Poland who once told me that to get a full nights sleep you have to draw the drapes. On the flip side winter's nights are long. Good for relaxing in front of the fireplace.

Has anyone seen any lightening bugs? I haven't seen a one. They seem to be late this year.

Catching up

I'm a bit behind in posting. We are between mushroom seasons. Morels are a memory and summer's mushrooms are just thinking about fruiting. Yes there are mushrooms out there. I led a walk at Mingo on Saturday and we found about fifteen distinct types of mushrooms. I was hoping for some Chicken Mushrooms but we found not a one.

Gardening is taking up my time now. It's slowly taking shape and I hope to get everything shipshape this week. There is always weeding to be done. It would be nice to have a mushroom garden. Six foot squares with mushrooms appearing in season. Picture it: Yes we had a good crop of morels this year but as you can see they're finished for the season. I'll have a good crop of horse mushrooms if I take the time to water them. Look I think that the first chanterelles are going to make their appearance. Oh I'd better weed the oyster mushrooms. Well if I had a mushroom garden it would save a lot of wear and tear on my legs.
