Hot, hot, hot

I did manage to get out last week, on Tuesday, and I found some chanterelles. Just like the morels, a whole lot of walking with success or failure determined by one spot. I came home soaking wet and drained of energy.

I've not seen many mushrooms along the road or even in my yard. I guess it's the heat.

Mushrooms in the yard

I've been picking mushrooms in my yard. Marasmius oreades, the classic fairy ring mushroom or lawn mower mushroom. My wife likes them but I can take them or leave them (mostly leave them). But they are fun to pick and I'm careful to be sure to get the real thing and not some of the other mushrooms that grow in a ring.

I cut grass at my in-laws house and found the ground underneath the chestnut tree producing an abundance of russula mushrooms.

I want to get out and look for chanterelles but the hot weather is going to be just brutal. Maybe with an early start it might be do able.

Rain on the way

We had a very nice walk on Saturday at Deer Lakes and the memorial that we had for Dorothy Fornof was very nice.

Chanterelles will be up this week. I found some just starting to "bud" on the walk. I hoping that the rain will push out a bumper crop.

There is no better way to learn mushrooms than to join a mushroom club. Look at this photo of the identification tables that June Korda sent to me.

Too much of a good thing

I see that Big John has found some chanterelles and black trumpets. I've never had any luck finding black trumpets. Big John says that you need at least two inches of rain in order for them to fruit. Well we've been blessed with more than that so if the blessing ceases this afternoon I may get out and do some exploring.
