Check at the park office for location. We will have a slide show at 8:00 pm at the park amphitheater. They have 282 modern campsites, an excellent fishing lake, swimming, and hiking. There is a mixed oak forest
including red, white and chestnut oak, sycamore, birch, maple, red and white pine, hemlock, Japanese and European larch, Norway and white spruce.
July 27 - 10:00 to 12:00 Blue Run Trail, Allegheny County. Meet Dorothy and Robert Fornof at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve and then proceed to Blue Run Trail. This has been a perennial favorite spot of
ours to find mushrooms. Even if the weather is dry, we seem to do very well with a variety of species.
July 27 - Promised Land State Park, Pike County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III. This is one of the biggest PA State Parks. We will have a walk in afternoon and a slide show in
the evening. Although we have never hunted this park before, this is the area where the New Jersey Club holds one of its major forays. About 3,000 acres in size, Promised Land State Park is in the Pocono Plateau and
is surrounded by 12,464 acres of Pennsylvania's Delaware State forest, including a natural area. The forest consists primarily of beech, oak, maple and hemlock trees. Take I-80 to exit 151B, on the left towards
Wilkes-Barre. Merge onto I-81 north. Take exit 187 towards I-84. Merge onto I-380 S. Take I-84 E towards Milford. Merge onto I-84 E. Take the PA-390 exit, exit number 26, towards Promised Land State Park/Tafton.

August 3 - 1:00 to ?? McConnell's Mill State Park, Lawrence County. Meet Bob Lucas and Elizabeth Barrow. We will walk and identify mushrooms we find. Take I-79 to Exit 29, Rt 422W and go
toward New Castle. In 1.5 mi., Rt 422 crosses Rt. 19. Just 0.3 mi. beyond this intersection is the park entrance on the left. Follow this road for 1.1 mi. to a large picnic and parking area on the right.
August 7 - Wednesday 7:00 pm to ?? South Fayette Township Park, Allegheny County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III. We will search for mushrooms, identify them, and have a slide
show. From I-79, get off the Bridgeville Exit, turn right onto Rt. 50. Come to a T, turn right onto Washington Pike, proceed for 2.1 miles, turn left on Boyce Road, go .2 mile, onto Longshrader. Go to stop sign, turn
right onto Greenwood, go past 10 houses on right side and find entrance to Park.
August 10 - 9:30 am to 3:00 pm McKeever Environmental Center, Mercer County. Meet Walt Sturgeon. Walt is our club's Scientific Advisor and a NAMA award-winning photographer. The day will consist
of a slide program, collecting forays and an identification session. Participants will learn about edibility, folklore and ecology. Forms, colors, tastes, oxidation reactions and collecting tips will be part of the

the third light on New Castle Road, turn right onto Alameda Park Road. There will be a Burger King on your right. The Carousel Shelter will be on your left at the second stop sign.

September 21 - Deer Lakes Park, Allegheny County, Russelton. Meet Dorothy and Robert Fornof. From the PA Turnpike get off at the Allegheny Valley Exit 5. Turn toward New Kensington. Turn left
onto Route 28. Follow to Pearl Avenue and turn left. Continue on Pearl Ave, it becomes Russelton Road. In Russelton, turn right at the first intersection, look for a drug store, bank and liquor store and turn right.
Go a short distance you will see a Deer Lakes Park sign, turn left into the park. Just past the first lake, there is a large parking lot; meet there.
September 19 to 22 - North East Mycological Federation Foray, Ellenville, NY at the Nevele Grande Resort & Country Club. The federation consists of 20 mushroom clubs, including our own. The purpose of NEMF

September 27 to 29 - Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church Camp near East Liverpool, Ohio. Meet the Ohio Mushroom Society for its big fall foray. Dr. Britt Bunyard will speak on insects and fungi. More
information as it becomes available. It is about 65 miles, an hour and 25 min. from Pittsburgh. It is just off Rt. 170 north of Calcutta on Duke Road.

October 10 to 13 - North American Mycological Association Foray, Diamond Lake, Oregon. Diamond Lake is 85 miles northeast of Medford, Oregon and just north of Crater Lake National Park. Dr. Jim Trappe who is a
specialist in truffles, which are present in the area. Dr. Nancy Smith Weber, who is a specialist in Ascomycetes and wrote a book on morels. Dr. Mike Beug and other mycologists will be present giving programs and
workshops. Our own John Plischke III will present a mushroom photography workshop. Cost is $262 double/$336 single, we suggest going early and touring this beautiful part of the country. Check out their website for more

October 26 - 10:00 a.m. Yellow Hammer Corral, Tionesta. Meet Bob Lucas and Elizabeth Barrow at this extensive woods near Allegheny National Forest. During the dry spell, Liz
found chanterelles, lepiotas, cauliflower mushrooms, sulphur shelf, and more on one short ride. DIRECTIONS: North from Pittsburgh (or from the Turnpike) on I-79 to the I-80 exit. Go two exits East on I-80 to Route 8
(Barkeyville exit). Go North on Route 8 through Franklin, then turn left after the Sheetz onto William Flinn Highway (here 8 and 62 are the same roads). Go North on Routes 8/62 until they split at Oil City, then
stay on 62 for about 15 miles. The parking lot to the Yellow Hammer is on the left; if you see the Five Points Restaurant on the right, you've gone just a little too far (the ranch is right across the street). Meet at
the parking lot, then we'll compare finds and stop at the Five Points for lunch

6. (Directions) Free to members with 2003 membership card; $5 for non-members. There will be a morel slide show, mushroom hunts, Edible Mushrooms & Their Preparation
slide show, and lots more. Camping is available for the weekend for $5. We found morels at this program last year.

May 11 - 1:00 to ? Return to Mingo Creek with Tom Volk. Meet Tom Volk and John Plischke III in the parking lot of Shelter #4. (Directions) We will hunt mushrooms of all types, without concentrating on morels.
Tom Volk is a Professor of Biology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, located on the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin. He teaches courses on Mycology, Medical Mycology, Plant Biology, Plant-Microbe
Interactions and Latin & Greek for Scientists.
His internet web page, Tom Volk's Fungi, has more than 1000 photos of fungi from all taxonomic groups, a popular "Fungus of the Month" feature, and an extensive
introduction to the Kingdom Fungi.
Besides dabbling in mushroom cultivation, Tom works on the genera Morchella (morels), Hydnellum (a tooth fungus), Armillaria (honey mushrooms) and Laetiporus (chicken of the woods, or sulfur shelf). He also has
conducted fungal biodiversity studies in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alaska, and Israel. He is a popular speaker at many amateur and professional mycological events throughout North America, including many NAMA and NEMF
forays. This is another opportunity to hunt mushrooms with an internationally known mushroom expert.

June 21 - 10:00 to 12:00(?) North Park, Allegheny County. Meet Jack & Valerie Baker at the Swimming Pool parking lot. North Park has a variety of habitats, although the area abounds in large oaks
there is a large variety of trees and habitats that make this an exceptional place for hunting mushrooms. Will go to secret location. Directions on Meeting page.
June 28 - 10:00 to 2:00 Miller's Tract, Butler County. Meet Dick Dougall and Glenn Carr. This is a premier mushroom spot that mycologists Dr. Sam Ristich and Dr. Tom Gaither have led walks to before. Directions: From the Slippery Rock exit of I-79, proceed north on Rt. 108 to Slippery Rock. At the light in town, turn left on Rt. 258. Go one block, and turn left on Water Street. Follow
Water for app. 2 mi. It crosses an iron bridge over the creek. After the bridge look for a small parking area on left at the head of a dirt lane. Do not block the lane. Parking is limited. No rest room.
July 12 - 9 am Meet John & Kim Plischke and the at the Conemaugh Lake Dam parking lot. Directions: At Route 22 New Alexandria red light go 987 north for 4.6
miles. Turn right at the Citgo Station onto Tunnleton Road. At 6.5 miles turn left on Pump Station Road and cross the bridge. At 7.4 miles turn right on Aven Road. At 8.1 miles turn right to Conemaugh River Lake.
We will have the slide show in a room in the dam! The Army Corps of Engineers will demand seeing a photo ID. the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Center. Meet for a slide show, walk and identification from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. At 9:00 pm there will be a mushroom slide show at Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater; bring your chairs
or a blanket. The leaders will camp for the weekend — stop and say hello. Cook Forest is one of the premier mushroom spots in western PA with a wide variety of species found there. From Clarion, take Rt. 66

red blinking light. Follow Saxonburg Blvd. about 2 1/2 miles, entrance will be on your right. This is about a mile and a half from Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve.
August 23 - 3:00, Oil Creek State Park, Venango County. Meet the Plischke family at the Petroleum Centre
Amphitheater. There will be a slide show at 3:00 followed by a walk at 4:00. The park entrance is off of PA Route 8 past Oil City, one mile north of the Borough of Rouseville. The entrance is on the right, then three
miles to the office.
September 11-14 NEMF Sam Ristich Foray. will be held at Scott's Family Resort on Oquaga Lake, SW of Deposit, NY. This is right over the NY border and is in a great mushroom area. See the NEMF website for more information and a registration form. They are predicting a wide variety of fungi because of the moisture content from Winter through the Summer. There are all kinds of
habitats in the area.
Consider attending this event to increase your knowledge of fungi, have a great time, learn from and meet some of the most prestigious Guest Mycologists this side of the Mississippi River. Among the guest mycologists so
far definite are Gary Lincoff, Bill Roody, Sam Ristich, Doug Bassett, Richard Korf, and our own John Plischke III. The list is not yet complete and there will be many other mushroom experts there.

Wild Mushrooms and How to Prepare Them. WPMC members are invited. From Butler, PA take Rt. 8 north about 16 miles. The Boy Scout Camp Bucoco is on the left, about 2 miles north of where Rt. 173 intersects with Rt.
8. At the camp, drive straight back and you will see the Preston Center; it is a large wood building with a green metal roof.
April 17 - 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Meet members of the Western PA Mushroom Club and the Western PA Field Institute in North Park. We may only cover a mile or two on
this outing, but our minds will travel extensively during the many stops examining mushrooms and other fascinating fungi. Some of the most extraordinary and colorful things in the forest take this
non-animal-vegetable-or-mineral form. We'll learn how to differentiate the delectable from the dangerous, but it takes years to develop enough expertise to forage on wild mushrooms. That doesn't lessen the fun of
searching for the dirty dozen denizens of the damp! Pre-registration with WPFI is required; the cost is $8 ($10 Non-Members)

then follow the directions above.

Bumbarger and John Plischke III at the Park Office. We will hunt for chanterelles and other mushrooms. John Bumbarger has hunted this area often and thinks chanterelles may be up at this time. Follow US 30
east to Schellsburg, on the western side of Bedford .
July 7, 7:00 pm – ??: South Fayette Township Park, Allegheny County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III. We will search for mushrooms, identify them, and have a slide show. July 15 – 18: NAMA foray 2004 will be held at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, NC. A great diversity of mushroom picking sites is found around this area. This summer, the foray is
overlapping with MSA (the association of the professionals) so there will be a lot of mycologists to learn from! On the web, see www.namyco.org for the registration form. NAMA
membership is required; one can sign up on the registration form. Our own Bill Roody, Walt Sturgeon, and John Plischke III will be members of the faculty.
July 24, 10:00 – 2:00: Chanterelle Mania at North Park, Allegheny County. Meet Valerie and Jack Baker at the swimming pool parking lot — find the car with a yellow ribbon on the
antenna. Last year this spot produced bags and bags full of beautiful chanterelles. There were also a good number of boletes and other species. You never know what the season will bring, but it could be very good

Country Trail in State Game Lands 95. Habitat is predominantly mixed hardwoods (oak, hickory, maple, etc.) with stands of pine and some open meadows and grasslands. Directions: From
I-79, exit at Slippery Rock, follow Route 108 east through the town of Slippery Rock, turn right onto Branchton Road and continue past Routes 8 and 308, shortly after crossing Route 308 turn right into the parking area
directly across from the "North Country Trail" marker. From Route 422, follow Route 38 north to Parsonville, turn left onto Old Brick Road and continue until the road comes to a 'T', turn left onto Branchton Road,
continue for about 2-1/2 miles and turn left into the parking area directly across from the "North Country Trail" marker.

August 28, 11:00 am: Brady's Run Park, Beaver County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III for a program and walk.
Directions: Head on the Parkway West out of Pittsburgh toward the Airport/Route 60. Pass the Airport on Route 60 and continue on to the Chippewa exit. It is the last exit before 60
becomes a toll road. When you exit at Chippewa, make a Right at the light onto Route 51, south. Continue on Route 51 (about 2 miles) until you come to the red light in front of the entrance to Brady's Run Park. Make a
right into the park. About 1 mile down the road (near the lake and beach) you will see a turn up the hill to your right and a sign that says "Ed Calland Arboretum". Turn here and follow the road all the way to the top,
you will see a parking area and the pavilion.
September 4, 10:00 – 2:00: Fall Run Park, Allegheny County. Meet Dick Dougall. Directions: From Rt. 28 go north on Rt. 8 for .7 miles to Saxonburg Blvd (do not
turn here). Continue north on Rt. 8 to the 2nd red light and turn right on Fall Run Road. Cross Pine Creek and make an immediate left into the parking lot.
September 3, 2:30: Promised Land State Park, Pike County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III. Directions: Take I 80 to I 81 to Scranton, Pa. Then I-84 east to Promised Land State Park. This is one of the biggest PA State Parks. We will have a walk in afternoon at 2:30, meet at the park
office and we will drive to a new area of the park. There will be a program in the evening at 8:00 at the park auditorium. Although we have never hunted this park before, this is where the New Jersey Club holds one of
its major forays.
September 4, 3:00: Beltzville State Park, Carbon County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III at 3:00 for a slide
show and walk. Beltzville is five miles east of Lehighton, just off of US 209. Directions: From the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike, take Exit 74 and follow the signs to the
park.
September 5, 1:00: Nescopeck State Park, Luzerne County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III at the Environmental
Education Building at 1:00 for a slide show followed by a mushroom walk at 2:00. Directions: Traveling east on I-80: Take Exit 262 (Hazleton, Mountaintop - PA 309.) Follow PA 309
south about 0.75 mile. Turn left onto Honey Hole Road. The park begins along Honey Hole Road a short distance east of the I-80 underpass. Travel about 6 miles along Honey Hole Road to enter the Lake Frances Day Use
Area. It will be on your right side just opposite Lake Frances Road.

Baker at the Roaring Run Bike Trail Parking. Directions: From the east end off the Rt 66 bridge at Rt. 56. Go South (up stream) on the Kiskiminetas River Road. At 1:15 we will drive

September 9 – 12, 2004: NEMF Foray at Geneva Point Conference Center, in Center Harbor on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. There will be lectures and workshops all day Friday and Saturday, as well as

will provide more details to those who are interested in the near future. Last year they found about 170 species in the Lost River area, and it could be great for chanterelles and other choice edibles, (weather
cooperating, of course).

July 21 to 24 - 2005 NAMA Foray at the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse, WI A great diversity of mushroom picking sites is found around
this area. The host Mycologist is Tom Volk who is a mycology professor at the University. Check the NAMA web site for registration information.
July 23 - 10:00 to 2:00 Chanterelle Mania at North Park, Allegheny County. Meet Valerie and Jack Baker at the swimming pool parking lot. Last year this
spot produced bags and bags full of beautiful chanterelles. There were also a good number of boletes and other species. You never know what the season will bring, but it could be very good again. North Park has a
variety of habitats, although the area abounds in large oaks there is a large variety of trees and habitats that make this an exceptional place for hunting mushrooms.
July 30 - 10:00 to 2:00 Miller's Tract, Butler County. Meet Dick Dougall. This is a premier mushroom spot that mycologists Dr. Sam Ristich and Dr. Tom Gaither have
led walks to before.

September 16 to 18 Meet the Mycological Association of Washington at Camp Sequanota in Jennerstown, PA, which is where they've had excellent foray weekends in September of every year but two since 1988. The record number of
species there was about 260, and sometimes found vast quantities of choice edibles (well, pretty good amounts) like black chanterelles, horse mushrooms, Boletus separans and Boletus bicolor.
September 24 - 10:00 to 12:00 Jackson Farm, Charleroi, Westmoreland County. Meet Gavin Farkas and LaMonte Yarroll. Directions: (From North or South: Take I-79 or
Route 51 to I-70, then continue with the remaining directions.) Take I-70 to Exit 17 (Charleroi). Turn right onto Route 88 South. Go 5-6 miles, past the Allenport Steel Mill. After you pass the Speedy Mart, take the 2nd
right onto Walnut St. After a sign that says Howling Hills there is a T; turn right at this T, and continue to the Jackson farm. There is a variety of habitats that should make hunting good.

Turnpike) east to exit 67 (old exit 7) Irwin/North Huntingdon, bear right at the exit ramp, take U.S. Route 30 east for 15 miles, turn left onto Fraser Purchase Road (unmarked) at the light at St. Vincent Drive, travel
½ mile to campus entrance sign, turn left into campus, follow signs to Westmoreland Earth Day parking and event. The club will have a booth at this event.
April 29 to 30 - 11:00 am - Morel Madness Weekend at Mingo Creek Park (directions), Washington County. Call Christine
(724-228-6867) to pre-register with the park – even if you're not camping – and check in at the Henry House. This is the largest morel foray in the region. John Plischke and John Plischke III

From Pittsburgh and West: Take Route 22 East and turn left (North) onto Route 981 at the traffic light in New Alexandria. Follow Route 981 until you come to the stop sign at the bridge leading into
Saltsburg (the town is on your right, and the Kiski campus is atop the cliff on your left). Proceed straight ahead after stopping. (Be advised that traffic coming down the hill toward the bridge, AND the traffic
crossing the bridge from your right, have the right-of-way. Be careful!) Bear left where the road forks just in front of you. Continue on Route 286 W up and around the curve in the road. (Route 981 continues straight
ahead toward the Kiski Valley Inn and on to Avonmore; do not take that direction.) The entrance to the school is on the left, as you crest the hill, between the tall brick pillars and before you reach the BP/Subway.
Meet in the parking area to the right just past the security shed.

Directions: Kings Gap is about 45 minutes south of Harrisburg. From Interstate 81, take exit 11. At the exit, travel south on Route 233 about 2.5 miles. Turn left onto Pine Road and continue 2.5

before Erie. At Erie take 90 East to just over the New York State Line. Take the Westfield Exit #60. Turn left onto North Portage ST (NY 394). Turn right onto West Main ST (US 20). Turn left onto Chestnut St (CR21).
Turn left on Mt. Baldy Rd. Drive past the water treatment plant on the left and just at the top of the next hill, begin looking for orange cones on the left at the driveway. This entire trip is 2 hours from Butler. My
cell phone number is 724-822-0631. Rough camping: tents, campers would be fine. No hookups. Water will be available. This location is a few miles from Lake Erie and about 15 minutes from Lake Chautauqua.

August 19 – 10:00 to 12:00 Jackson Farm (home of the Howling Hills Haunted Hayride) Allenport, Westmoreland
County. Meet Gavin Farkas and LaMonte Yarroll. The variety of habitats makes hunting sound good.
Directions: (From Pittsburgh or North and South: Take I-79 to I-70 E, then continue with the remaining directions.)
Take I-70 to Exit 40 (Charleroi). Go South on Rt. 88, and go 5-6 miles past the Allenport Steel Mill. After you pass the Speedy Mart, take the 2nd right onto Walnut St. (look for a sign that says Howling Hills). At the
T, turn right onto High Rd, then jog left onto Highland St. Highland St. becomes Sloan Road, which takes you to the Jackson farm.

488 East, Portersville Road. Make a slight left onto Pleasant Valley Road. Merge onto US-422 east. Take the PA-528 exit toward Prospect. Turn left onto PA-528 North Franklin Street. Continue for about 7.5 miles.
September 23 – 10:00 am to 4:00 pm: Join the New Jersey Mycological Association for their FUNGUS FEST, NJMA's biggest mushroom event of the year. It will again be held at Frelinghuysen
Arboretum at 53 East Hanover Avenue in Morristown. They promise lots of fungus fun and mushroom information for all. There will be mushroom identification, exhibits and talks, guided walks, cooking demonstrations, cultivation, arts and crafts and
a whole lot more.
September 28-30: Meet the Mycological Association of Washington at Camp Sequanota in Jennerstown, Somerset County, which is where they’ve had excellent foray weekends in September of every year but two
since 1988. The record number of species there was about 260, and sometimes found vast quantities of choice edibles (well, pretty good amounts) like black chanterelles, horse mushrooms, and Boletus separans.
September 28-30: Join the Eastern Penn Mushroomers for the Helen Miknis Memorial Foray. This year’s annual EPM foray will be held at King’s Gap Environmental and Training

OCTOBER WALKS
October 13 - 11:00 am to 2:00 pm: Cook Forest State Park, Clarion County. Meet Jim Strutz in the parking lot next to the "Cathedral" area of the park. The walk will center in
the Tom’s Run area. I'll continue on my own after 2:00 pm and into the next day in Cook Forest, Clear Creek State Park, perhaps in a few places in Allegheny National Forest and in State Game Lands depending on how much time I feel like
taking. I made camping reservations for myself at Ridge Campground, site 31. There are other available sites nearby. Mushroom hunting will be done by foot, by bike, and by car. Some places may be hilly. Anyone is welcome to join me on any or all
of this “unofficial” part of the excursion. Make a day or a weekend of it. Cook's Forest is one of the premier mushroom spots in western PA with a wide
APRIL WALKS
April 28 & 29 - 11:00 am - Morel Madness Weekend at Mingo Creek Park (directions), Washington County. Registration begins at 11 am, the program begins at 12 noon. John Plischke and John Plischke III will present a slide show and lead the event. There will be an evening
program on “Edible Wild Mushrooms & How to Prepare Them.”
Camping will be available for $5 per campsite for Saturday night only. There is no electrial hookup but water and firewood will be available. Campers and camping vehicles may camp on the hard lot. Tent campers may use the appointed grassy areas.
This event is sponsored by Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation. There is no fee for WPMC club members; for non-members there is a $5 per-person fee to participate. TO PRE-REGISTER WITH THE PARK (even if you’re a member and

the Southern Alleghenies. John Plischke III and Kim Plischke will lead the walk. Directions: from the PA Turnpike, take exit 146 toward Bedford/Altoona onto U.S. 220/I-99 exit 146. Keep right at

South (up stream) on the Kiskiminetas River Road.
June 8th 6:00-8:30 pm at Nescopeck State Park, Luzerne County. Meet John Plischke and John Plischke III at the Environmental Education Building for a slide show followed by a mushroom
walk. Traveling east on I-80: Take Exit 262 (Hazleton, Mountaintop - PA 309.) Follow PA 309 south about 0.75 miles. Turn left onto Honey Hole Road. The park begins along Honey Hole Road a short distance east of the I-80 underpass. Travel about 6
miles along Honey Hole Road to enter the Lake Frances Day Use Area. It will be on your right side just opposite Lake Frances Road.

over an hour. The wide variety of habitats makes hunting good.
July 21 – 10 to 12:00 – Chanterelle Madness, North Park (directions) Allegheny County. Meet Randy Danielson at the Swimming Pool parking lot. Last year this spot produced bags and bags full of beautiful chanterelles. There were also a good number of boletes
and other species. You never know what the season will bring, but it could be very good again. North Park has a variety of habitats, although the area abounds in large oaks there is a large variety of trees and habitats that make this an
exceptional place for hunting mushrooms. Mushrooms that are collected on this walk will be displayed at an identification booth at Northway Mall from 1 to 4 pm. Bring any mushroom that you would like to know more about, and garner tips on which
mushrooms are edible, how to cook them. and how to avoid the poisonous varieties.
July 28 - 10:00 t0 12:00 - Emmerling Park, Indiana Township, Allegheny County, with Jim Tunney. Enjoy this mushroom
walk along a part of the Rachel Carson Trail. Directions: From Route 8, go east on Route 910, or from Route 28, go west on Route 910. The park is on Cove Road almost directly across from the Indiana Township
Municipal Building. Meet at the large parking lot in the park.
